What types of homes does Moose Ridge Build?
Moose Ridge builds log homes, timber frame homes, and hybrid homes. Our log homes are either semi-handcrafted (not a "kit"), or full handcrafted. Inaddition to log homes, we build full timber frame (post and beam or "barn" homes) as well as hybrid (combination of log and timber frame). We can build a complete turnkey home, shell only, or anything in between.
What types of logs do you use and where do they come from?
We are an authorized dealer for Yellowstone Log Homes, based in Rigby, Idaho. Yellowstone is one of the country's oldest and largest log home companies. Their logs are primarily dead-standing lodge pole pine from Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.What log profiles are available?
We offer logs in sizes from 8" all the way to 16". Our logs are primarily a saddle-notched corner system with a Swedish Cope. In addition, we offer "D" logs, as well as flat dovetail logs for those clients that wish a more"Appalachian" look. We also offer full handcrafted log homes, and those logs can be as big as 24 inches!Are your logs green or dried?
Our logs are from dead standing timber, harvested from forests in the western U.S. They are extremely dry, with little to no noticeable settling.How energy efficient is Moose Ridge Log Homes?
Our log homes are some of the most thermally efficient homes being built today. Unlike regular wood framed structure, log homes are rated in"Thermal Mass" as opposed to "R" values. The "Thermal Mass Effect" relates to the ability in which heat transfers through the walls of a building is delayed by the wall mass. Logs can store the heat and "reflect" it back into the room. Because of their thermal mass and the cellular structure of the wood fiber, our homes are more energy efficient to heat and cool than a conventional frame home built with 2x6 construction and R19 insulated walls..I understand that there is more exterior maintenance required on a log home as opposed to a regular wood framed structure, is this true?
Exterior maintenance will depend very much on the location and positioning of your home, however assuming you use Borate exterior log preservative and one of the reputable products on the market for stain, maintenance is no greater than a regular home. We will advise you on a selection of products available.How long will it take to build my log home?
This can vary greatly based upon several factors including weather, location, etc. A realistic expectation for complete turn-key build is about 7-9 months. Keep in mind this does not include design time.What windows and doors do you use?
We primarily use Pella windows, sliding doors and French doors. Other brands available include Marvin and Anderson. For the exterior doors, we use Therma-Tru steel entrance doors and Timber Valley Millwork custom-made wood entrance doors.How are the interiors of your homes finished?
Wall logs, interior wood doors and trim are hand sanded and then finished with 2 coats of a water-based satin varnish. Roof rafters and the T&G are finished the same way. Floor beams, columns and timber frames are hand rubbed with tung oil. All the wood floors are finished with 3 coats of oil based varnish. The drywall is painted with 2 coats of latex paint with your choice of color. Logs, timbers, doors, trim and floors can also be stained to your choice of color.What type of interior doors, trim, and flooring do you use?
All of our trim is custom made and we can make custom interior doors. Additionally, we are a custom crafter of furniture and millwork. Our wide-plank hardwood floors are milled from the trees we clear from the home-site; then either hand pegged or nailed with handmade wrought-iron nails. Our wide-plank pine floors are made by us for each individual home. We also make custom "elements", such as knee braces, barn board siding, tables, cabinets and stairways..Are there any other craftsmen involved in your construction process?
Moose Ridge believes in working with as many talented artisans as possible. Currently we have our chainsaw sculptures done by the very talented Jim Rourke of Tree Creations in Porter Township, PA and have also been using the beautiful handcrafted copper lighting by Tom Hutton of Hutton Metalcrafts in Pocono Pines, PA. Most recently we started working with Woodland Creek, of Traverse City, MI, an amazing rustic furniture company, who makes custom pieces of furniture to fit perfectly in harmony with our unique homes. We are always striving to find quality craftsmanship that lives up to the high standards of a Moose Ridge Log Home.Do you offer design service?
If you can dream it, we can design and build it. You can choose from one of Moose Ridge's stock- plans or have an in-house CAD designer work on yourdesign ideas. We can work with a design firm of your choosing or as we have in the past worked with the prestigious mountain home design firm of Moss Creek Designs. As a Yellowstone Log Home dealer we have a complete architectural service at our disposal. We also work with an outside structural engineering service.
